Woven by Diné (Navajo) weaver Lucille Dougi of White Cone, Arizona, this Navajo Third Phase Chief Blanket weaving reflects one of the most historically significant textile styles in Navajo weaving tradition. This blanket is woven from handspun sheep wool using commercial dyes, featuring a background of black and white stripes outlined with red, with alternating bands of black and gray. Over this striped background are patterned diamonds—a full diamond in the center, half diamonds along the edges, and quarter diamonds in the corners—creating a design meant to be appreciated while worn.

Chief Blankets were highly valued trade items in the 1800s and were worn by leaders and respected individuals across the Plains and Southwest. Known for being warm, soft, naturally water-resistant, and artistically complex, these blankets represented both status and craftsmanship. This Third Phase design represents a later development in the Chief Blanket tradition, incorporating bold diamond imagery while maintaining the strong horizontal banding that defines the style.
