This cast metal benchmark magnet honors Smokey Bear, representative of the longest-running public service campaign in US history that has warned us about the dangers of wildfires since 1944. The real-life Smokey Bear was a cub found in a tree in the midst of a wildfire in New Mexico’s Capitan Mountains in 1950. The New Mexico state game warden presented the cub to the Forest Service, with the understanding that he’d be dedicated to a publicity program of fire prevention and conservation.
