The story of Pecos is one of change and of a people flexible enough to meet this change, preserve traditions, and survive for centuries in this mountain valley. In its heyday, Pecos was a thriving village of perhaps two thousand people. Plains Apache, Comanche, and Navajo traded and lived in the fields and forests in the area. In 1540 a Spanish expedition arrived, marking the start of their influence on the people already in the area. The church preserved at Pecos is the last of four adobe mission churches built here.

This Ancestral Sites Trail Guide details 16 unique points of interest along the trail. The trail is a 1 1/4-mile loop that starts and ends at the E. E. Fogelson Visitor Center, taking visitors past several pueblos and the Pecos church and convento.
