Cave shields are large speleothems that form when calcite-rich water moves through bedrock cracks. These shields grow slowly over time, creating concentric layers of calcite. Lehman Caves has over five hundred of these formations.

The front of this collectible coin features an image of Parachute Shield, the most famous cave shield at the park. The reverse features an image of Nevada, the state where Great Basin National Park is located.
