This travel stamp features the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site, which preserves the legacy of the pivotal 1954 Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education. The site, located in Topeka, Kansas, was once Monroe Elementary School, one of four elementary schools for Black children in Topeka. Many Blacks-only schools were inferior to whites-only schools, with rundown facilities and fewer buses to transport students. On May 17, 1954, the Warren Court handed down a unanimous decision that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal," and schools were ordered to desegregate "with all deliberate speed."
