Within the Tonto Basin sit two Salado Indian cliff dwellings built around 1300 AD and abandoned for unknown reasons fewer than two centuries later. Ruins of the upper and lower cliff dwellings are preserved in the Tonto National Monument, built within natural caves on a steep hillside overlooking Theodore Roosevelt Lake. Native cacti, mountain lions, bats and other creatures of the Sonoran Desert seek refuge in the monument today.
