Scientists estimate that this "rather rare beast" in northern Arizona first erupted in 1064 CE, and continued to erupt on and off for a century and a half. The remnants of those eruptions have created a unique landscape that is now preserved and protected by the National Park Service. This book explores the geology of the area, past and present, as well as the flora and fauna within the park.
