Sunset Crater and Wupatki are intimately bound by both their histories and their geography. The people who lived here a thousand years ago adapted to the volcanic topography and survived the eruption of the 8,000-foot cinder cone in 1064–1065. A Guide to Sunset Crater and Wupatki shows both the breathtaking scenery and the beautiful structures the ancient people created amid this landscape. This book also tells the story of how researchers determined the dates and extent of the eruption and the effect it had on the people of Wupatki Pueblo.
The guidebook begins at the south entrance turnoff to Sunset Crater National Monument on Highway 89. It then follows the Sunset Crater/Wupatki road as it curves past Sunset Crater (4 miles), drops into the desert near the Wupatki Ruins (21.5 miles), and rejoins Highway 89 at the north entrance (35.3 miles). Enjoy the ride!
