The saguaro (pronounced suh-war-oh) stands tall among cacti, though it only grows in a narrow stretch of the Sonoran Desert. A giant saguaro can reach up to 50 feet in height and is a keystone species, providing food, shelter, and water for desert animals. The ribs of a saguaro expand to store water, and a large water-filled plant can weigh up to six tons. A typical saguaro is both huge and old, living up to 200 years, making the saguaro the old man of the desert!
It is the sum of these qualities that draw the artist's attention. Sunset Magazine featured a giant saguaro on its cover in May of 1931, and it is this cover that will appear as you build this 500-piece puzzle. Striking red and white cactus flowers occupy the forefront and purple mountains and a Pueblo styled abode spot the background.
