This Wide Ruins rug, woven by Santanna L. Begay of Ganado, Arizona, is entirely hand carded, hand spun, and made of natural and plant-dyed wool. Wide Ruins designs emerged in the 1920s and 30s, inspired by earlier banded blankets and vegetal dyeing traditions.

The style is known for its horizontal bands and finely detailed weaving. Colors come from indigenous plants and minerals, producing soft desert hues that carry a strong sense of place. Families often guarded their unique dye recipes, making each rug even more personal. Santanna’s rug reflects this heritage, blending earthy tones with the precision of her hand.

Wide Ruins rugs are sometimes described as reflections of the natural strata of the land, capturing the layered beauty of the Southwest. Santanna’s weaving continues this legacy, offering both tradition and individuality in every thread.
