Woven by Diné (Navajo) weaver Nikyle W. Begay of Cornfields, Arizona, this Navajo saddle blanket rug demonstrates remarkable technical skill and mastery of complex pattern weaving. This rug is made from Navajo Churro wool that has been hand spun and hand carded, using natural wool colors and cochineal dye to achieve the deep red tones. The weaving features a network of interconnected diamonds and precise diagonal lines, a technical achievement that required the use of 20 heddles during the weaving process.

Nikyle Begay is not only a weaver but also a Diné shepherd, fiber artist, teacher, storyteller, and photographer, deeply connected to every stage of the weaving process—from raising sheep to spinning wool to weaving the final textile. His work reflects both technical excellence and cultural continuity, demonstrating the deep knowledge required to produce Navajo textiles of this complexity. This saddle blanket rug is a strong example of both artistic design and weaving mastery within the Navajo textile tradition.
