This Burntwater rug was handwoven by Navajo weaver Judy Nelson of Indian Wells, Arizona. Known as the Butterfly Rug, it is created from natural wool in shades of brown and black, along with plant-dyed hues of green, turquoise, and rust brown. Every strand was hand carded and hand spun, reflecting hours of careful work.

Judy’s Butterfly Rug carries a sense of movement and transformation, symbolic of beauty and renewal. The use of plant dyes adds a unique dimension, as each hue carries a connection to the natural environment of the Navajo homeland.
