Take your memories on your next adventure! Pictorial medallions are a unique memento of your park adventures, each showing a new park visited, region explored, or trail traversed. This medallion features an image of the official geodetic benchmark located at Fortification Hill within Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Thirteen million years ago, the crust around the Lake Mead area was stretched and thinned so iron and magnesium-rich magma and basalt, poured out of the ground and covered the landscape. The darker lava produced many of the black volcanic flow-capped mesas, such as Fortification Hill and Callville Mesa, seen in many parts of Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

A benchmark is a permanent mark established at a known elevation and used as the basis for measuring the elevation of other topographical points within a given area. They also happen to look cool, which is why we produced this hiking stick medallion! These pictorial medallions are handmade by a master engraver.

  • Official hiking stick medallion approved by the National Park Service for Lake Mead National Recreation Area
  • Includes brads and adhesive backing for secure attachment to your hiking stick
  • Size: 1 3/4" round
