Journey through time with this guide to the Quarai Trail at Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. This trail takes you through the unexcavated Tiwa Indian village and seventeenth-century Franciscan Mission ruins of Quarai. Learn about archeological clues that tell the story of the original inhabitants of Quarai - Tiwa-speaking Puebloans who migrated into the area in 1300 CE. Follow the trail to view the remnants of structures from the Spanish church to a Tiwa kiva. Cultural and societal rifts along with famine and drought ultimately led both the Spanish and Puebloans to leave the area in the 1670s.
