Beloved by home cooks, cookbook enthusiasts, and history buffs, WNPA’s An Army Wife’s Cookbook preserves the recipes of Alice Kirk Grierson. Alice was the wife of Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson, commander of the 10th Cavalry of Buffalo Soldiers. She spent many years living among army wives who moved westward, and, out of necessity, they developed innovative ways to care for their families with limited resources.
This cookbook, compiled by the National Park Service at Fort Davis National Historic Site, contains Alice’s original recipes and contemporary interpretations for modern cooks. For over fifty years, it has kept Alice’s spirit alive through her recipes and household tips, offering a glimpse into a bygone era.
Included in the collection are classic dishes like clam chowder, gingerbread, Boston baked beans, and spiced beef. Additionally, you’ll discover more unusual recipes such as Lottie’s curry bisque, Grandmother Tilsby’s cracker pudding, and plum cake. Moreover, the book offers practical household hints, including remedies for colds, toothaches, coughs, and even gunpowder burns!
