Evidence of human activity in what is now Bandelier National Monument dates back more than 10,000 years, from early nomadic hunters who pursued large game animals through the area, to the height of permanent settlement, which peaked around 1350 CE. The Pueblo Loop trail, a 1.4-mile scenic round trip, takes visitors through Frijoles Canyon, and winds through notable ancestral Puebloan structures built during this peak of dense settlement. The trail allows visitors an up-close look at kivas, the settlement at Tyuonyi, expansive cliff dwellings, and an impressive volcanic landscape. This trail guide explores the cultural, archaeological, and geological context of 21 points of interest along the trail, deepening understanding of the remarkable history of the Frijoles canyon and its rich ancestral Puebloan past. The trail itself has a mixed terrain comprising a relatively level paved path for the first .25 miles to Tyuonyi Pueblo, and steep, narrow stairs leading to the cliff dwellings and Long House.
