From the time President Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railroad Act in 1862 until the Golden Spike ceremony at Promontory, Utah, in 1869, the dramatic story of America's first transcontinental railroad captured the world's imagination, and the steam engines that met face-to-face on that fateful day are no exception.

Rebirth of the Jupiter and the 119 provides a firsthand account of the modern reproductions of these two steam locomotives. These exact working replicas of the 1868 locomotives provide a tangible link to the legacy of the railroad that tied a nation together. Combining modern and historic technologies, some of which had not been seen or reproduced for a century, the engines were manufactured from the wheels up to within one-quarter inch of the original specifications.
