Washita Battlefield National Historic Site Trail Guide Situated on over 300 acres in western Oklahoma, Washita Battlefield National Historic Site marks the spot where, on November 27, 1868, Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer commanded the Seventh US Cavalry in a surprise attack on an encampment of Southern Cheyenne led by Peace Chief Black Kettle (Moketavato). A tragic event among a series of violent conflicts in the Great Plains Wars, the massacre claimed the lives of many, including Black Kettle, ending his long-term work toward peace between the US Army and Indigenous populations of the Great Plains. This trail guide provides visitors with a greater understanding of the events that took place at Washita, offering historical context for important sites along the 1.5-mile trail.
