Around the year 1085 CE, an eruption radically changed the landscape around Sunset Crater Volcano. The ground split open along a fissure nearly six miles long, with lava erupting to heights of up to 850 feet. As lava thrown from the fissure cooled, it fell back to earth as tiny rocks called cinders, or as larger pieces called lava bombs. Both piled up around the main vent of the fissure, creating the cinder cone that we see today.

Celebrate the unique geology of this special place by sporting our Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument ballcap, featuring the name of the park and an outline of the volcano behind a line of green forest embroidered on the front.

  • Official park ballcap approved by the National Park Service for Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument
