In 1877 the town of Nicodemus, Kansas, was the Promised Land to African Americans determined to make the most of new opportunities after the Civil War. With courage and perseverance but few material possessions, they made a new life for themselves in a challenging geographical setting. Today's residents work with Nicodemus National Historic Site to preserve the oldest surviving black pioneer town west of the Mississippi and the only remaining western town established by African Americans during Reconstruction.
