Chaco Culture NHP Chetro Ketl Trail Guide

The Chetro Ketl trail guide, published by WNPA, introduces readers to an extraordinary vision of a world that existed thousands of years ago. Chaco Canyon is best known for the large-scale, multistoried masonry buildings that were constructed by the ancestors of the Hopi and New Mexico Pueblo peoples. From 850 CE until 1150 CE, Chaco was the center of a ceremonial, administrative, and trade network that encompassed a vast area of the San Juan Basin and Colorado Plateau.

The 500-room public structures built throughout the region in the Chacoan style are called great houses, easily distinguishable from other regional architecture by their masonry, massive scale, astronomical alignments, preplanned design, and geometry. Today, the Chacoan vision, which is preserved in the architectural remains along a half-mile trail in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, continues to find expression in the lives and traditions of the Pueblo people.
