Approximately sixty thousand years ago, the formation of Capulin Volcano began when molten rock erupted thousands of feet in the air. The rain of cooling cinders and volcanic ash formed this now extinct cinder cone. Capulin Volcano National Monument protects the dramatic evidence of the spectacular volcanic events that formed the mesas and mountains of northeast New Mexico.
