Winchester Model 1830 Rifle Pen
In June 2014, members of the National Park Service's cultural resources team were working in Great Basin National Park on a routine survey to identify and record important archaeological and historic areas and artifacts. They never expected to happen upon a true treasure. Leaning against a gnarled juniper tree in a remote part of this sprawling national park was a model 1873 Winchester rifle.
The rifle, now called the Forgotten Winchester, has since been restored and returned to Great Basin National Park, where it serves as the centerpiece of a new exhibit. The exhibit focuses on the important role of the Winchester rifle in westward expansion, which earned it the nickname "The Gun That Won the West."
