National parks are a place where everyone should feel welcome and accepted. The Outside Safe Space tree is a welcoming symbol for LGBTQ+ people. Whether you're an ally or identify as LGBTQ+, the Outside Safe Space tree shows that you want everyone to feel safe and free to be who they are, wherever they are.
The Outside Safe Space symbol, inspired by safe space logos embraced by schoolteachers nationwide, was designed to incorporate the history and diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. The colors representing the transgender and bisexual communities were deliberately placed nearest to the trunk to symbolize the foundational role they played in the queer civil rights movement.
As America's storytellers, the National Park Service (NPS) is committed to telling the history of all Americans in all of its diversity and complexity. For many LGBTQ groups, preserving and interpreting their past has been an important part of building communities and mutual support. Read more
