This postcard commemorates the Sand Creek Massacre on November 29, 1864, that killed more than 230 Cheyenne and Arapaho over the course of seven hours in southeastern Colorado Territory, about 170 miles southeast of Denver. At dawn, approximately 675 soldiers of the First and Third Regiments of the U.S. Cavalry carried out the attack, which changed the Great Plains forever and is now enshrined at the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site.
