There is a legend that says the famed Oaxacan alebrijes (fantastical creatures) were first created by Pedro Linares after he became ill. Delirious in Mexico City at age 30, Linares dreamt of a strange place resembling a forest in which strange, composite animals were all shouting, “Alebrijes!” When he awoke, he is said to have crafted the first alebrijes from papier-mache; thus a new genre was born.

True or not, the whimsical, colorful, fantastical Oaxacan alebrijes and other imaginative carvings symbolize the Mexican state of Oaxaca and its pageantry, music, and handmade crafts. Oaxacan woodcarvings captivate art lovers and other audiences with their zoomorphic shapes, intricate patterns, and intriguing colors. Each one is carved entirely by hand, using copal wood, and then painted with natural pigments. Oaxacan artists have begun to see copal stands dwindle, but forward-thinking artists like those with whom we partner are replanting these stands to ensure that the medium through which they create their art lasts for generations to come
