The Hopi have woven utilitarian and ceremonial baskets for many centuries, and despite a burgeoning collectors market, their contemporary basketry deviates little from traditional patterns and styles. Geometric and pictorial desighs, such as those woven on plaques gifted to Hopi grooms and their families, are carefully crafted and steeped in symbolism.

This particular example is a wonderful coiled plaque from the Hopi 2nd Mesa featuring a negative star design. Star designs are very prevelant among Hopi culture as symbols representing their cosmological ideas. This example is densely woven, as evidenced by the overal weight of the plaque, and exhibits the exactingly symmetry for which Hopi basketry is known.
